Start a game without permissions asked!
Zynga is implementing their Games with the ”start now” function.
Disturbing ot Not?
It might get more people to install the games as that permissions dialog box will be gone …. but in essence nothing changes as soon you click the “Start Now” button you gave them permissions to access your basic profile info and friends lists.
Games with the feature available at the moment:
- Zynga Slingo
- Indiana Jones Adventure World
The “Start Now” games will be able to access to a user’s basic profile information and friend list without requesting permissions.
A blue bar above the game will allow users to opt out at any time and the app will no longer have access to their information.
You probably don’t think much of Facebook games asking for permission to access your basic information (birthday, friends list, profile picture, and other public details tied to your account), but that little dialog box (like the one pictured below) can turn off potential players from trying a new game. When you’re a giant publisher like Zynga who deals with an audience of millions, you want to make it as easy as possible for people to open your app.
This new functionality is currently available to a small amount of Facebook users, though the “play now” button should begin appearing for more players soon. If a game needs to access more detailed information, like an e-mail address or a birth date, it’ll still have to ask for permission, but it can do so after the initial installation.
At the Blue Bar when you click “Learn More” you will see following info screen.
Disabling the game:
Facebook has already updated its Help Center with information about the change.
